A wammo is a Warrior/Monk. It used to be a derogatory slang term, but now it's just general usage for most people. And it's the class a lot people start with because it's easy to play and helps you learn the game.

Slang for Warrior/monk. A lot of new players use them for the monks healing power, so they have a bad rep for being idiots. At the moment, Assassins have the same problem because the difficulty in finding one that is good at it.
Back on topic: Warrior is a good way to go if you like dealing damage(with armor and whatnot you have room for error as you adjust to this game)
I'm told mesmer is tremendous at pvp, but it will take some work to get to that level. They require good timing and a bit of experience with what skills other people tend to use. If you decide to go that way, try using a prebuilt one and tweaking it as you learn.
See ya round the game...

Warrior is a great class to PvE through the game with. It's fun, resilient, and does a lot of damage. Just make sure you equip a lot of damage skills, and don't waste spots on 'tanking' skills which are more often than not a wate of space (Watch Yourself! is all you really need).

Well, there is no class that's better then all the rest, you'll just have to find a class you're comfortable playing and look for a group which you can aid (in HA atleast this can be extremely difficult since most people are nazis when it comes to who gets into their groups and not), but in general pvp (team arena and random arena) you'll have a much easier time getting in.
Like the others, I suggest a warrior as a starting class. The class is easy to step into and do carnage as long as you don't put too much trust into your self healing (or lack of it, which is where the term wammo is most often used). If you'd prefer a spellcaster I suggest you try an elementalist. They are a bit more difficult to step into then a warrior, but are pretty basic as well.
Note; even if the two classes I mentioned are easier to play doesn't make them any less powerful then others, every possible combination has possibilities so feel free to mix and match around. Just be aware that warriors shouldn't be using too many spells and elementalists shouldn't be charging into combat

Mesmer's the most unique class and has great potential in both PvE & PvP.
There's nothing quite like it in any other game, and for me it's the star of the core professions.
Core professions are Elementalist, Mesmer, Monk, Necromancer, Warrior and Ranger.
Elementalists are best equated with WoW mages.
Monks with Priests.
Necromancers with Warlocks (and a bit of D2 Necromancer).
Warriors is warriors.
Rangers are Hunters.
But there's no equivalent to the Mesmer in WoW.
And they get the most dapper armour too

For sure start the game as a Warrior/monk, or Warrior/ranger, both are lots of fun and easy to learn, then you can make the second most popular class a monk. and then casting class after that. I tryed ele first and got stuck, every party needs warriors and monks. with those you will enjoy the pve game the most, Come to think of it, PVP uses warriors and monks MOST of the time too...good luck have fun, and message me in game if you need help

Exactly, your playstyle will determine what class you'll play. And if you're looking for a class always in need. It'd be the Monk types that heal or protect other players.

What class did you enjoy playing in WoW? Play the class that's closest to it.

The most important thing is to not view GW as an alternative to WoW.

I know everyone here is saying wammo, but to be honest, you will NOT get a pvp group very fast being a wammo because as you can see a lot of people have wammos. HOWEVER if you intend to play through the game as many classes and only do pvp minimally till you get the majority of unlocks then wammo is just fine to go with and I would highly recommend it.... Or monk cause it makes getting a group easier ~_^
Warders (aka elementalists) & monks are something that pvp will want and need no matter what. It's unlikely to ever see a group without a monk unless its a complete damage build. And Warders are becoming a staple food of balanced and odd groups everywhere.
Mesmers are complex but very fun to play, as are necros - both these classes can easily get a group as well.
Rangers cannot find a pve group for nothing half the time, but its easier for them to find a group in pvp.
I would say play what you know you can handle and are comfortable with. Not everyone is cut out to play monk, mesmer, warrior and so on... If you start playing and can't get a handle on the class you picked.. start over or work harder.
(I can't play a monk to save my own life, let alone anyone elses, but let me at any other class and its heaven.)

In guild wars you can't jump to pvp right away, but try out the warrior class first since it's easy to use. There also a lot of terms in pvp. And yes yo'll really love the pvp in this game, except for the rude idiots you'll meet in it as well =P.

Warrior, monk, and ranger are the easiest classes to learn and also the most versatile for soloing and playing specialised roles. They have lots of depth to them, and they're popular in pvp, so if you want to complete the pve game with one or two characters and then keep them, those are good choices. Monks can see the actions of all party members, both the adept and the inept, which is educational and frustrating. Mesmers are easy to play in pve, and making a mesmer will let you try out all of their skills before you use them in pvp.
But all classes are pvp classes, so it doesn't matter much. (But I'd recommend one of those four.)

Wow, you have been PvEing too long, or not made a character recently. You do know you can make a PvP character right from the start. Right?
He can test out any of the premade builds and unlock skills with Balthazar faction and create any build with skills he unlocks.
For the original poster...
I would test out all the premade PvP characters and see if you like those. You will be able to unlock other skills for your PvP characters, as well as weapon upgrades and armor runes, with faction you earn from PvP battles.
You can also unlock those things for PvP in PvE by earning/buying those skills and finding items with runes/weapon upgrades on them.
There is also a new option to buy all prophecies skills for your PvP characters through the GW store that you can access after creating an account and get to the character screen. It costs $40 but gets you into PvP with any build you want quickly.
I suggest browsing the PvP forum here on Guru for character builds too.

im my honest opinion i think making your first character a wammo is the WORST idea possible... it basically puts the game on very easy, and you dont get to learn alot other then put mending on and solo everything.
i suggest you pick the class that is closest to the one you had in WoW. or you can just create a char for each class and test em out and see which one you like the best.
